The Global Roots Garden is an Intergenerational program that brings seniors and youth together in learning how to garden, cook and environmental skills. Youth work with senior newcomers to grow their own gardens and harvest the vegetables too! Participants also get to learn about nutrition, and get to share healthy recipes and natural remedies.
I began this program in the beginning of the New Year. I was introduced to the youth program at CultureLink by my guidance counselor since I needed to start my volunteer hours. Once, I got here I was very excited to see the different activities we did every week. I also got the opportunity to plan the Chinese New Year event with seniors, which was a lot of fun. It is a great place to make new friends, meet new people, and have fun. Most importantly, I get to be introduced to a new culture by people from all over the world. Because of this, I encouraged my friends to come to CultureLink. They all loved it and have been regulars since. CultureLink provided me and the other participants with a great environment to explore new ideas and try out new things that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do by myself.
