After a long time of virtual events, CultureLink and Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA) organized an in-person outdoor walk on July 30th, 2021, to encourage exploring and engaging with nature at the Earl Bales Park in Toronto. The outreach coordinator from Ontario Streams, who is passionate about conservation education and connecting others with the environment, and the dedicated team who are also nature lovers, guided the tour around the park.
Participants were very happy to learn about water streams, plants, insects, and animals found at the park. They were mainly excited to explore this gem in downtown Toronto; it was surprising that none of us had ever been to this park, except for Ontario Streams staff of course! Children participating in the event were able to identify black walnut trees and spotted raspberries.
It took a lot of preparation from the team to ensure COVID-19 safety protocols are applied. Our staff completed the COVID-19 screening for all participants and themselves. We look forward to organizing further outdoor programs that help newcomers to Canada maintain their well-being by making connections with their environment.
