Starting a new life in another country is never easy. Abenaya arrvied in Canada with over five years of experience as a software developer, confident in her abilities, and yet, finding a job proved to be an uphill battle.
“Finding a job in Canada was challenging,” she told us. “I was unfamiliar with the job search process, interview formats, and even the specific documentation required. It was a daunting experience”.
Despite her extensive background in computer science, Abenaya realized that adapting to the Canadian job market would require more than just technical expertise. That’s when she discovered CultureLink’s Cybersecurity Training Program. “Given the demand for cybersecurity professionals in the market, I decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a game-changer, and it helped me secure a job here in Canada”.
Learning a New Skill
Although experienced in software development, Abenaya didn’t know much about cybersecurity. “The rapid evolution of technology made me realize the importance of expanding my skill set,” she explained. “Cybersecurity was an area where I could learn and grow, and this program was the perfect way to do that.”
But it wasn’t just technical skills she needed. Overwhelmed by the job search process, she lacked the confidence and clarity on how to approach the Canadian job market. “My resume was four pages long, filled with my software development experience,” she admitted. “I wasn’t sure how to make my resume stand out or what the interview process would be like.”
The Program That Changed Everything
The turning point came during the first week of the program. “It was a game-changer,” she remembers. “We focused entirely on job search strategies—perfecting resumes, writing impactful cover letters, and mastering LinkedIn. But what stood out the most was the confidence the mentors instilled in me.”
A key moment came just two days after the program started, when she received and invitation for an interview. “I was in the middle of class, and with no hesitation, one of the amazing mentors arranged a private meeting room for me to take it,” she said. “Her thoughtfulness and the unwavering support she showed gave me the confidence I needed to perform at my best.” Thanks to the skills she learned and the support she received, Abenaya succeeded in the interview and got the job.
A Bright Future
Today, Abenaya is thriving in her new role and excited about her future in Canada. “CultureLink’s Cybersecurity Training Program not only helped me gain a new skill but also provided the confidence and support I needed to land my dream job,” she said.
Her gratitude for the program shines through as she reflects on her journey. “I would 100% recommend this program to other newcomers. Canada is now my home, and I’m excited about the future as I continue to grow and contribute to the cybersecurity field here.”
Abenaya’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and the willingness to adapt. For newcomers like her, this isn’t just a training course—it’s a bridge to a brighter future.
