Welcome to High School!

Every year, before schools begin, CultureLink’s Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) team organises a Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) at different TDSB and TCDSB schools. With the support of peer leaders and school teachers, NOW provides fun and engaging activities for newcomer high school students that encourage socialization, and prepares them for a smooth transition into school life in Canada.

This year we had a special request by Ms Velocci, Principal at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School (BMTM). In an effort to continue the school’s tradition of welcoming and supporting newcomer students, they asked us to organize a Newcomer Orientation Day in February, for newcomer students starting school in the second semester. Our team, of course, jumped at the chance to contribute to a successful school experience for them.

Normally, our SWIS team spends a few days before the event preparing a group of newcomer students (from previous NOW sessions) to become Peer Leaders, who then guide and support new students. This time, the team recruited a group of experienced Peer Leaders, who collaborated with the school’s administrative staff, secretaries, teachers, and one of our Youth Workers. As a result, over 30 newcomer students—eager to begin their academic journey in Canada—had the opportunity to make friends, familiarize themselves with their school, and learn about community resources and essential school procedures.

🗣️ “I never thought in Canada I would feel so welcome, and that people would go out of their way to help me understand and start right at my new school.” – Pearl, Newcomer Student

🗣️ “I had lots of fun in the games and made new friends. Before today, I hadn’t laughed this much since I got to Canada.” – Paul, Newcomer Student

For the youth that participates, these events are a meaningful and welcoming experience that builds a strong foundation in their new learning environment. We are proud to continue collaborating with schools to ensure that all newcomers receive the guidance and encouragement they need to navigate their new school successfully. Our partnership with BMTM has turned this program into a staple in the school community, reinforcing our commitment to support newcomer students and their families.
